A collection of reports and dashboards on various civil matters in the Massachusetts Court System.

Below is a list of available Massachusetts Trial Court statistical reports and interactive dashboards on civil matters. Summary statistics reflect the type and volume of cases handled across the state over recent years.

Interactive Dashboards

  • Massachusetts Trial Court Annual Case Filing Statistics
    • Case filing statistics for each Trial Court department from FY 2002 through FY 2022.
  • Massachusetts Trial Court, Civil Case Filings
    • Civil court case filings dating back to FY2017. View annual totals or data by Trial Court Department, case type, or county. The dashboards include each of the Trial Court departments, including Boston Municipal Court, District Court, Housing Court, Juvenile Court, Land Court, Probate and Family Court, and Superior Court. This data is updated annually. To download data from this dashboard, select the download icon at the top-right or bottom-right corner of the screen and select “crosstab.”  Under Select Format, select Excel (.xlsx) or comma-separated value (.csv).  Any filters or selections currently applied to the dashboard will be reflected in the downloaded file.
  • Residential Eviction Cases, Non-Payment of Rent
    • Dashboard of residential eviction case filings for non-payment of rent. All data is compiled from the Trial Court's case tracking system, Masscourts, and is updated weekly.
  • Residential Eviction Cases, Tier 1 and Tier 2 Events
    • Results of Tier 1 and Tier 2 events on residential eviction cases for non-payment of rent. A Tier 1 event is a mediation hearing that occurs after a landlord files an eviction case. If the parties can't reach an agreement in mediation, they proceed to Tier 2, where the case is decided in Civil Court. All data is compiled from the Trial Court's case tracking system Masscourts and is updated weekly.
  • Residential Eviction Cases, Executions Issued
    • Dashboard of court-ordered evictions (or executions) for non-payment of rent. All data is compiled from the Trial Court's case tracking system, Masscourts, and is updated weekly.
  • ​​​​​​Massachusetts Trial Court, Case Filings, Adult and Juvenile Substance Abuse, M.G.L. Chapter 123, Section 35
    • Case filings for adult and juvenile substance use commitments under M.G.L. Chapter 123, Section 35. Section 35 authorizes involuntary commitments to a treatment facility for up to 90 days in cases where someone is likely to do serious harm to themself or others. This data is updated quarterly.
  • Massachusetts Trial Court, Case Filings, Restraining Orders (209A) and Harassment Orders (258E) 
    • Case filings for restraining orders (209A) and harassment orders (258E). Includes data by county and Trial Court department. This data is updated annually.
  • Massachusetts Trial Court, Emergency Protection Orders (ERPO)
    • Dashboard of Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) petitions filed in Massachusetts Trial Court. View data by petition outcomes, party race, ethnicity, gender, and ERPO surrenders. This data is updated quarterly.

  • Section 35 Civil Commitment Case Filings
    • This data set contains information on Section 35 filings. Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 123, sec 35 permits the courts to involuntarily commit someone who has an alcohol or substance use disorder and there is a likelihood of serious harm as a result of his/her/their alcohol or substance use. Such a commitment shall be for the purpose of inpatient care of a person with an alcohol or substance use disorder in a facility.
  • Restraining Orders (209A) and Harassment Orders (258E) Case Filings
    • This data contains records of case filings for harassment (258E) and restraining (209A) orders. Harassment orders can be used to protect people against anyone, while restraining orders (sometimes called abuse prevention orders) are used to protect against people who are married, residing together in the same household, in a substantive dating or engagement relationship, related by blood or marriage, or have a child in common.
