Filing Season Roundup

With less than a day remaining in the filing season, here’s how things are going. To date, we’ve had just over 2.5 million returns filed and 1.7 million refunds issued. The Customer Service Center has taken approximately 106,000 calls. E-filing is the way to go to get those returns in by tomorrow’s deadline. Visit the E-file and Pay Your MA Personal Income Taxes page for filing options and information.

Pay with MassTaxConnect

If you have a payment due with your return, the fastest way to pay is online with MassTaxConnect. Payments can be made with or without an account on MassTaxConnect. We have a YouTube tutorial to guide you through the process. If you can’t pay your personal income tax obligation in full, pay as much as you can when you file your tax return and consider setting up a payment agreement.

Save the Date: Extension Due Date

If you qualify for an extension to file a personal income or fiduciary tax return, the date to get the return filed is October 15, 2024. An extension is only for additional time to file, not to pay. Any amount due and not paid will incur interest, even if a valid extension is on file.

Plan Ahead: DOR Fraud Prevention Program

Future Tax Planning Tip: In case you haven’t already, sign up for our fraud prevention opt-in program. Taxpayers who opt in are notified when a return is filed using their social security number. The taxpayer will then be asked for confirmation before a refund is issued. Sign-up is easy. Call DOR at (617) 887-6367 or send a message on MassTaxConnect.

When to Amend or Appeal? What’s the Difference?

If you want to increase or decrease an amount or correct an error, you will amend your tax return. On the other hand, if you disagree with the amount of tax that was assessed, you could choose to appeal.
