How can I participate in free testing with Mass Measures?

Information about free testing with Mass Measures.

You can learn how to participate in the Mass Measures study at one of our in-person outreach events or by email at MassMeasures@mass.gov or phone at 1-866-626-4224.

During the summer of 2025, we will share information about Mass Measures at events and by distributing flyers throughout the state. If you express interest in participating in the study, we will contact you to enroll you in the study. Starting in the fall, enrolled participants can give samples in two ways:

  1. At an in-person sampling event
  2. At-home testing kit

At an in-person sampling event

At an in-person sampling event, we will take a small sample of your blood and urine. We will hold sampling events throughout the state. The following steps will explain how in-person sampling of blood and urine works:

StepHow in-person sampling of blood and urine works
1You’ll receive a letter with your appointment date. The letter will include fact sheets and a link to complete an online consent form.
2You’ll sign the consent form.
3You’ll complete a questionnaire covering topics such as health, hobbies, and diet.
4You’ll arrive for an hour-long appointment. We’ll greet you at a check-in table.
5Our trained professionals will collect a urine and blood sample.
6After your samples have been collected, you’ll receive juice and a snack, as well as information about next steps.
7You’ll receive results within about 6 months of providing your sample(s).

At-home testing kit

You can use an at-home testing kit to give us a urine sample. You cannot provide a blood sample with this option. We will send you a kit by mail. You can ask us to pick up your sample, or you can deliver it to one of the locations on the list we provide. The following steps will explain how at-home sampling of urine works:

StepHow at-home sampling of urine works
1You’ll receive a letter with instructions, fact sheets, and a link to complete an online consent form.
2You’ll sign the study consent form.
3We’ll call you when we mail your testing kit.
4You’ll receive a testing kit in the mail. You’ll complete the exposure questionnaire and provide your urine sample.
5Within 1 week of receiving the kit, you’ll ask us to pick up your sample or you’ll take it to one of the locations on the list we provide.
6You’ll receive results within about 6 months of providing your sample.

How will I get my results?

You will receive your results in a confidential letter or secure email within about 6 months of providing your samples. Results will include:

  • Levels of chemicals measured in your sample
  • Comparisons to levels measured in the U.S. population
  • Ways to reduce exposures, if needed

If you wish, you can call us to talk about your results.
