Description

Mashpee Pine Barrens WMA is 203 acres of pitch pine scrub oak wood and shrubland within a greater complex of conservation land in association with Wampanoag Tribal Land and U.S. Fish and Wildlife property. The property has expanded in acreage by MassWildlife over multiple land purchases during the years of 1986, 1995, and 2002. The property is currently being managed through forest cutting and prescribed fire.

Location, access, & parking

Access to Mashpee Pine Barrens WMA is located on Great Hay Road. The formal parking area is a gravel parking lot for about 6 vehicles on the southern end of the property and the west side of Great Hay Road. Informal roadside parking is available throughout the property along Great Hay Road.

Hunting & fishing opportunities

This area provides sufficient cover for upland game species such as gray squirrel, eastern cottontail, wild turkey, white-tailed deer, and eastern coyote.

Wildlife viewing & other features

Wildlife viewing opportunities can include woodland bird species, upland game species, reptiles such as eastern box turtles and unique species of insects, such as the buck moth (Hemileuca maia) that rely on pitch pine forest habitats.

About Wildlife Management Areas

WMAs are intentionally wild, visitors will find natural landscapes rather than maintained trails.

MassWildlife owns and manages over 220,000 acres of land to conserve fish and wildlife habitats and provide access for outdoor recreation. All WMAs are open to hunting, fishing, trapping, and other outdoor recreation activities. Visit the MassWildlife Lands Viewer for an interactive map of MassWildlife properties.

You can support land protection in Massachusetts. Contributions to the Wildlands Fund help pay for the cost of acquiring wildlife habitat. Learn more about the Wildlands Fund.
