How Can I Become an Electrician?

Learn what are the requirements to become a licensed professional electrician.

The Electrician profession includes journeymen electricians, master electricians, system contractors and system technicians. 

All four professions are regulated by Board of State Examiners of Electricians.

How Long Does it Take to Become Licensed?

In order to become licensed, you will need to complete a program in a Board-approved school and then pass a written and practical exam. Minimum school programs for each profession are:

  • Journeyman Electrician 
    • To sit for for the Journeyman Examination, 600 hours of education are required as a prerequisite 
  • Master Electrician
    • To sit for for the Master Electrician Examination, 150 hours of education are required as a prerequisite. 
  • Systems Contractor
    • To sit for for the Systems Contractor  Examination, 75 hours of education are required as a prerequisite. 
  • Systems Technician
    • To sit for for the Systems Technician  Examination, 300 hours of education are required as a prerequisite.
