Research and Materials Section (RMS)
The Research and Materials Section (RMS) supports the safety, quality, and performance of Massachusetts’ transportation infrastructure through materials testing, engineering, research, and technical expertise. Our teams evaluate the materials used to build and maintain highways, bridges, and other transportation assets, while supporting innovation and the development of standards and specifications. From laboratory testing and field evaluation to research and new technologies, RMS helps ensure MassDOT projects are built with quality, durability, and long-term performance in mind.

Aeronautics
We are dedicated to making air transportation safer, cleaner, more efficient, and more economically advantageous for the people, communities, and businesses across the state.

Rail and Transit
