DCR Parkways Flood Resilience Adaptation Strategies

Strategies to protect DCR parkways from flooding while maintaining their cultural, recreational, and natural features

DCR is studying ways to reduce flooding on parkways identified as vulnerable in the DCR Parkways Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment. The DCR Parkways Flood Resilience Adaptation Strategies project includes a series of reports identifying a range of adaptation strategies, along with their advantages and disadvantages, to protect DCR parkways from flooding while maintaining their cultural, recreational, and natural features. 

These strategies are early ideas, not final decisions. They are meant to start conversations and gather input from community stakeholders and other agencies around preferred approaches. They are not intended to result in changes to flood maps and are not a complete list of options.

Once preferred strategies are identified, future phases of analysis, modeling, and design will be required to more accurately determine their effectiveness, impacts, permitting viability, and cost before moving forward.   

In 2026, reports will be developed for Nantasket Beach State Reservation, Quincy Shore Drive, Nahant Road, Winthrop Parkway, and Alewife Brook Parkway. 

Parkways Flood Resilience Adaptation Strategies
