Overview
Health care personnel (HCP) are at high risk for influenza (flu) and coronavirus (COVID-19) exposure and illness and may be a source of viral transmission in health care settings. Annual immunization decreases the risk of flu and COVID-19 and is the best method of preventing serious complications.
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) strongly recommends all HCP are vaccinated against flu and COVID-19 in accordance with the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Methodology used to calculate influenza and COVID-19 vaccination rates
- The overall vaccination rate (percentage) is calculated by dividing the number of healthcare employees vaccinated (numerator) by the total number of healthcare employees (denominator). The influenza and COVID-19 vaccines could have been administered in the healthcare facility or the employee may have reported receiving the vaccine elsewhere (i.e., physician's office, clinic, health center, pharmacy, etc.) Additional analysis includes facility specific percentages for declination of influenza by healthcare employees. For the purpose of the vaccination program, employees are defined as individuals, both full-time and part-time who are on the payroll as of December 31st. This data is updated annually.
