Amend a Return

If you filed a return and want to increase or decrease the amount of tax, amend a return to report an:

  • Error
  • Omission or
  • Change.

You should not file an amended return to dispute an audit assessment.

Do not file a Form ABT with your amended return.

Go to Amend a MA Individual Return for more information.

File an Extension

Some extensions are automatic.

Go to DOR's File an extension page if you need more time to file your taxes.

File or Pay on Paper

You have filing and payment options besides paper.

Go to the E-file and Pay Your Taxes page.

Filing by paper

Enclose all pages of the tax return and other documents in an envelope without using staples or paper clips.

Staples or paper clips may cause damage to the return and delay processing.

Go to DOR personal income tax forms and instructions to file by paper.

Paying by paper

When you make a paper check or money order payment to DOR, be sure to enclose your payment voucher (attached to your bill) with it.

If you did not receive a bill, use a payment voucher when sending a paper check or money order to DOR after e-filing your tax return.

If you are sending a paper tax return and a paper check together, no payment voucher is required.

If you can’t make your tax payment in full, pay as much as you can with your tax return.

Go to DOR standard payment vouchers to pay by paper.
