Basic tips for taking care of your mouth health

  1. Work to manage and improve chronic health conditions where you are able. Diabetes, heart disease, and respiratory disease are all linked to your oral health. Talk with your doctor about what strategies work best for you.
  2. Pick more healthy foods and drinks. Drink tap water with fluoride.
  3. Avoid or reduce harmful habits like drinking alcohol and smoking or vaping.
  4. Take care of your mental health
    • Find meaningful connections in your community
    • Look for ways to reduce your stress
    • Get good quality sleep and regular exercise
  5. Get the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. HPV vaccination can be started at age 9. Getting this vaccine could prevent more than 90% of cancers caused by HPV from ever developing, including oral cancers in the mouth and throat.
  6. Brush teeth with fluoridated toothpaste
    • Aim for 2 minutes, twice a day, using a soft toothbrush
    • Floss (clean between teeth that touch) at least once a day.
  7. Get a check-up with an oral healthcare professional, at least once a year. Don’t wait for tooth pain to go away on its own.
    • Schedule infants for their first dental visit by their first birthday.
    • For children and adolescents, ask about protective teeth coatings called dental sealants at their check-up. Also ask about fluoride varnish (a brush-on protective mixture).

Please note: Always consult with your healthcare provider to review your personal circumstances prior to making changes in your health routine. This information is not a replacement for dental care.
