Executive Order  No. 432: Declaring a State of Emergency resulting from the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001

WHEREAS, the recent, vicious terrorist attacks on our nation have created an unprecedented need to implement immediate and long-term security measures;

WHEREAS, these attacks have directly and indirectly caused and contributed to numerous security, public safety, economic, and fiscal demands;

WHEREAS, the government has the responsibility to protect and promote the well-being, health, safety, and security of the people of the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, the need to protect our cities and towns, coordinate strategy, maximize the use of funds, and sustain the physical and economic security and stability of the Commonwealth and its citizens is paramount;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Jane Swift, Governor of the Commonwealth, acting pursuant to the power provided by Chapter 639 of the Acts of 1950, as amended, and by virtue of the authority vested in me as Supreme Executive Magistrate, do hereby issue this proclamation that there now exists, and has existed since September 11, 2001, a state of emergency in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Pursuant to the powers granted to the Governor by the legislature in Chapter 639 of the Acts of 1950, as amended, and other provisions of law, I shall from time to time issue recommendations, directions and orders as such emergency circumstances require.

This proclamation of a state of emergency shall remain in effect until rescinded.

Given at the Executive Chamber in Boston this 2nd day of October in the year two thousand one.
