The Details

What you need

To set up a browser authenticator, you'll need a computer with an installed web browser of your choice, like Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge.

To register for a MyMassGov account, you’ll need to set up MFA. We recommend options including using an authenticator app on your cell phone or verifying your account by phone call or text and suggest that you set up at least two methods so that you have a backup available.

If you’re not able to use a phone for authentication, you can use an authenticator browser extension.

How to use

Step1 - Install an authenticator browser extension

The following browser extension installation instructions use examples from Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. If you’re not using one of these browsers, search for “extensions” in your browser for directions.

Google Chrome installation instructions
  1. Open Google Chrome and go to the Chrome web store.
  2. Enter "authenticator" in the search field, select one, then select "Add to Chrome."
  3. Select “Add extension” from the menu. The authenticator extension is added.
  4. Select the “Extensions” icon from the top of the browser window. If you're prompted to, select "authenticator."
  5. Select the “Extensions” icon again, then the “Pin” icon to keep the authenticator icon in your browser's extension list.
Microsoft Edge installation instructions
  1. Open Microsoft Edge and go to the Edge web store.
  2. Enter "Authenticator" in the search field, select one in the search results, and select "Get."
  3. Select “Add extension” from the pop-up menu. You’ll get a message that the authenticator has been added to Microsoft Edge.
  4. Select the “Extensions” icon again, then select the three dots next to your authenticator.
  5. Select  “Pin to toollbar."
Step 2 - Set up MFA using an authenticator browser extension

After installing an authenticator browser extension, you'll need to set it up for MFA.

  1. Add your browser authenticator to MyMassGov:
    1. If you have not already set up MFA for your account:  At the “Set up MFA” screen, select “Set up MFA”, then “Authenticator App”, then "Continue.” Go to step 2.
    2. If you have already set up MFA: Log in and select your email address next to your profile icon from the top right of the screen. Select “Account Settings”, then “Multifactor Authentication.” Select “Update MFA” and re-verify your email address. Next, select “Authenticator App” in the “Change MFA Settings” screen. Continue to step 2.
  2. The authenticator app set up screen appears with a QR code. At the top right of your browser, select the authenticator icon.
  3. The authenticator app appears as a drop-down. Select the “Scan QR Code” icon.
  4. A QR code scanning tool appears on the authenticator app set up screen. Select and drag your cursor over it.
  5. You'll get confirmation that the website has been added, and your MyMassGov account should now show in your authenticator app.
  6. Copy the code that has been generated in your authenticator app for MyMassGov and paste it into the “Enter your code” field in the MyMassGov authenticator set up screen or type the six-digit code into this field.
  7. Select “Continue” to complete the authenticator setup.
