What you need

Follow these steps to log in to MyMassGov and change or remove a phone number in your personal or business account. You can do this by updating your Multifactor Authentication (MFA) settings.

You will need to be able to log in, including access to an MFA method currently in your account and access to the phone number you're adding to your account. 

  1. Log in to MyMassGov.
  2. Access your account settings by clicking your email address in the upper right corner. Select "Account Settings" from the dropdown menu.
  3. Select "Multifactor Authentication" on the Account Settings page.
  4. Select "Update MFA Methods."
    1. You may need to enter a verification code from your current Authenticator app.
  5. You’ll be brought to a "Change your MFA settings" screen where you can choose the setting you want to change.

How to change

Option 1: Change your phone number

To change the primary or secondary phone number, follow these steps: 

  1. Select the phone number you want to change.
    1. If a primary phone has not been set up, you will be taken to a page to do so.
  2. You will see two options:
    1. Update phone number
    2. Remove phone number
  3. Select "Update phone number."
  4. Enter the new phone number.
  5. Select either "Text Me" or "Call Me."
  6. Select "Send Verification Code."
  7. Enter the code you receive by text or phone call into the field on the MyMassGov page.
  8. Select "Verify."
    1. If you don’t receive a code or the code you got doesn’t work or expires, select "Get a new code" and a new code will be sent to your phone.
  9. A confirmation will load on the "Account Settings" page when your change has been successfully completed.
  10. You’ll receive an email confirming that the phone number in your account has been updated.
Option 2: To remove a phone number

You can only remove your phone number if you have another MFA method set up. To remove a primary or secondary phone number, follow these steps:

  1. Select the phone number you want to remove.
  2. You will see two options:
    1. Update phone number
    2. Remove phone number
  3. Select "Remove phone number."
  4. Confirm if you would like to remove your phone number by selecting "Yes, remove this method’ or select "No, keep this method" to cancel the process.
  5. A confirmation will load on the "Account Settings" page when your change has been successfully completed.
  6. You’ll receive an email confirming that the phone number in your account has been removed.

MyMassGov doesn’t automatically update other applications you may use. You will need to log in to other applications through MyMassGov to update your personal information such as a phone number, email address, or street address.
