Appliance Efficiency Standards Compliance for Sellers and Installers

Instructions for how to comply with 225 CMR 9.00, Massachusetts' Appliance Efficiency Standards for covered sellers and installers.

Beginning on January 1, 2023, certain less efficient products may no longer be sold or installed in Massachusetts. To comply with the provisions of 225 CMR 9.00, sellers and installers need to ensure that all covered products meet the specified standards.  Below, you can find the details of how to comply with the regulation.

What Products Qualify?

  • New products only. Products that were installed prior to January 1, 2023 may be sold at resale.
  • Products that are certified in either the State Appliance Standards Database or Modernized Appliance Efficiency Database System.

What Products Do Not Need to be Certified

  • Products made in Massachusetts for sale outside of the state.
  • Products sold at wholesale in Massachusetts for sale in other states.
  • Products sold online, as long as they are not shipped to or installed at Massachusetts addresses.
  • Products explicitly excluded in the standard.

How Do I Know What Products to Sell or Install?

You can check whether you can sell or install most products by looking up the manufacturer or model number in the State Appliance Standards Database (SASD).  If you would like to check certification for sale or installation for computers, computer monitors, portable electric spas, and spray sprinkler bodies for irrigation, look up the manufacturer or model number in the Modernized Appliance Efficiency Database System (MAEdbS).

Categories, product types, and standards are listed below.  If you think the listings in SASD or MAEdbS are incorrect, please email doer.appliancestandards.mass.gov.
