The Details

What you need

Follow the steps below to log in to MyMassGov and add a phone number in your personal or business account. To complete these steps, you will need to be able to log in, including access to the multifactor authenticator app currently set up in your account and access to the phone number you want to add. You can add up to two phone numbers.

How to add

Steps to add a phone number
  1. Log in to MyMassGov.
  2. Access your account settings by selecting your email address in the upper right corner of the page. Select "Account Settings" from the dropdown menu.
  3. Select "Multifactor Authentication" on the Account Settings page.
  4. Select "Update MFA Methods."
    • Note: Any time you add an MFA method, you must re-verify your account. Complete verification again using your current authenticator app.
  5. You’ll be brought to a "Change your MFA settings" screen. Select “Phone (Voice & text).”
  6. You’ll be brought to the Set up Multifactor Authentication screen. Enter the phone number you want to use for MFA.
  7. Select either "Text Me" or "Call Me."
  8. Select "Send Verification Code.”
  9. Get the code by text or phone call and enter it into the field on the MyMassGov page.
  10. Select "Verify." If you don’t receive a code or the code you got doesn’t work or expires, select "Get a new code" and a new code will be sent to your phone.
  11. You’ll be brought to the "Account Settings" page, where a success message confirming your change will appear.
  12. You’ll receive an email confirming that the phone number in your account has been updated.

If you plan to travel out of the country and need to access your MyMassGov account, you may need to use an authenticator app. We recommend setting up both an authenticator app and SMS.

Note: If you're using an authenticator app, the entry in your app will be called "MyMassGov Personal" or "MyMassGov Business," depending on which login type it's for, followed by your login email address. If you set up your MFA before 2025, it may be listed as “Login.mass.gov” followed by your email address.
