Change the phone number in your MyMassGov multifactor authentication (MFA) settings

After you've set up your MFA, you can log in to your MyMassGov account to change a phone number.

What you need

Follow the steps below to log in to MyMassGov and change the primary or secondary phone number the MFA settings in your personal or business account. 

You will need to be able to log in, including access to an MFA method currently in your account and access to the new phone number if you will be replacing a current one. 

How to change

Steps to change your phone number
  1. Log in to MyMassGov.
  2. Select the "My Account" link in the upper right corner, then select "Account Settings" from the dropdown.
  3. Select "Multifactor Authentication" on the Account Settings page.
  4. Select "Update MFA Methods."
    1. Note: Any time you change an MFA method, you must re-verify your account. Complete verification again using of the MFA methods you have set up.
  5. You’ll be brought to a "Change your MFA settings" screen where you can choose the setting you want to change.
  6. Select the phone number you want to change.
    1. If a primary phone has not been set up, you will be taken to a page to do so.
  7. You will see two options:
    1. Update phone number
    2. Remove phone number
  8. Select "Update phone number."
  9. Enter the new phone number.
  10. Select either "Text Me" or "Call Me."
  11. Select "Send Verification Code."
  12. Enter the code you receive by text or phone call into the field on the MyMassGov page.
  13. Select "Verify." If you don’t receive a code or the code you got doesn’t work or expires, select "Get a new code" and a new code will be sent to your phone.
  14. A confirmation will load on the "Account Settings" page when your change has been successfully completed.
  15. You’ll receive an email confirming that the phone number in your account has been updated.

If you plan to travel out of the country and need to access your MyMassGov account, you may need to use an authenticator app. We recommend setting up both an authenticator app and SMS.

Note: If you're using an authenticator app, the entry in your app will be called "MyMassGov Personal" or "MyMassGov Business," depending on which login type it's for, followed by your login email address. If you set up your MFA before 2025, it may be listed as “Login.mass.gov” followed by your email address.

MyMassGov doesn’t automatically update other applications you may use. You will need to log in to other applications through MyMassGov to update your personal information such as a phone number, email address, or street address.
