Table of Contents
WHEREAS, it is the responsibility of the Commonwealth, acting through its appropriate agencies, to encourage and facilitate the development of its economic resources; and
WHEREAS, there is a critical need to provide immediate assistance to the apparel industry of the Commonwealth, and to the fifty thousand workers engaged in this, its second largest non-durable manufacturing industry; and
WHEREAS, this industry is faced with economic problems of a serious nature, including competition from other states and foreign countries where far lower wage rates prevail;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Francis W. Sargent, Governor of the Commonwealth, by virtue of the authority vested in me as Supreme Executive Magistrate, do hereby order as follows:
- There is hereby created the Governor's Advisory Committee on the Apparel Industry. The Committee shall consist of nine members, including the Secretary of Manpower Affairs, the Commissioner of Labor and Industries, the Commissioner of Commerce and Development, or their respective designees, and six additional members who shall be appointed from time to time by the Governor and who shall serve at his pleasure. The Chairman of the Committee shall be designated from time to time by the Governor.
- The Committee shall have the following functions and responsibilities:
a. To review and evaluate the problems of the apparel industry within the Commonwealth.
b. To advise the Governor on all matters concerning the industry, to include recommending to the Governor, within six months, legislative and/or administrative policies which it deems appropriate to encourage and facilitate the development of the apparel industry within the Commonwealth.
