Executive Order  No. 21: Authorizing State Treasurer to pay war bonuses to Korean War veterans

WHEREAS by Chapter 440 of the Acts of 1953, there was provided a bonus for veterans of the hostilities in Korea, the payment of which was to commence September 1, 1953, and

WHEREAS no provision was made in Chapter 676 of the Acts of 1953 for the issuance of notes as provided in Section 9, Chapter 440 of the Acts of 1953,

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Christian A. Herter, Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, acting under the provisions of the Acts of 1950, Chapter 639 and all other authority vested in me, do hereby issue this order as a necessary and expedient measure to meet the existing state of emergency.

  1. Until the bonds or notes provided for in Chapter 440 have been issued, the State Treasurer is hereby authorized and empowered to pay out of the treasury of the Commonwealth such amount as may be necessary for the prompt payments under Chapter 440 of the Acts of 1953, for certain residents of Massachusetts who shall have served in the armed forces of the United States during the hostilities in Korea, said payments to be in accordance with the provisions of said chapter 440 of the Acts of 1953.

GIVEN at the Executive Chamber in Boston this first day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and fifty-three, and of the Independence of the United States of America, the one hundred and seventy-eighth.
