Executive Order  No. 100: Establishing a Governor's Committee on Physical Fitness and Sports, and defining its powers and duties

Whereas, sports and physical fitness programs are of keen interests by the residents of the Commonwealth: and

Whereas, there is a need for better communication among all aspects of sports and physical fitness:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Francis W. Sargent, Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, acting under the provisions of all authority conferred upon me by law, do hereby issue the following order to promote the general welfare of the Commonwealth:

Section 1. There will be a Governor's Committee on Physical Fitness and Sports, which will enhance and increase the general level of physical fitness activities and awareness.

Section 2. The Committee shall consist of not more than 20 members, appointed by the Governor for periods from one to three years and represent various segments of the community including, but not limited to, educational leaders, amateur and professional sports, business, recreation, civic groups, communications, labor, related government agencies, and other organizations. The chairperson of said Committee shall be designated by the Governor.

Section 3. The Committee shall have the power to appoint an executive secretary and to receive funds from various sources to promote the activities of the Committee.

Section 4. The Committee shall be charged with the responsibility for:

  • Assessing and making recommendations to the Governor on fitness and sports programs throughout the state.
  • Acting as a clearinghouse and forum for fitness and sports information.
  • Promoting a wide variety of fitness and sports programs.
  • Stimulating physical fitness research and improving fitness programs.
  • Honoring outstanding personalities in fitness and sports from Massachusetts.

Section 5. The Committee shall present regular reports to the Governor containing the results of its research and recommendations for any action it sees as necessary.

Section 6. The Committee shall meet regularly and at intervals necessary to effectively carry out the mandate of this order.

Section 7. I hereby instruct that all agencies of the Commonwealth give full support to the efforts of the Committee on Physical Fitness and Sports.

Given at the Executive Chamber in Boston this fourth day of May in the year of our Lord, One thousand nine hundred and seventy- three, and of the Independence of the United States of America, the one hundred and ninety-seventh.
